Powerlifting

Overview

Powerlifting is an individual sport and athletes can begin competition from the minimum age of 14 years.

In Powerlifting there are three disciplines: Squat, Bench Press and the Deadlift. Each athlete has three attempts on each discipline the best attempt from each discipline together and this gives an end total.

Weight training is a natural means of exercise for the blind, as it requires little start-up expenses and can be achieved at home or in a gymnasium.
For the competitive athlete who is looking for an activity that he or she can perform with able-bodied individuals, powerlifting is one of the few sports where a blind person can compete on an equal basis.

Club Report

Updated 24 July 2009

Hello Damien,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Derry Beavis. I have been involved with blind sport since the late '70's. My involvement for the past 6 years has been mainly with blind powerlifting.

I have been told that you are the person to contact with regard to blind powerlifting in South Australia. Blind Sports Australia, (BSA), (previously Australian Blind Sports Federation (ABSF)), would like to see the S.A. blind lifters competing in BSA events, thereby giving them the opportunity to compete internationally in International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) championships and events.

The BSA championships are hosted by Powerlifting Australia as a part of their Masters and Juniors Australian Championships each year and are our major qualifying event for selection in subsequent year international events.

The 2010 Australian Championships will be held in Mannum, S.A. on the weekend of 7/8/9th May and we would very much like to see a strong S.A. involvement.

To be eligible to compete, lifters must be financial members of their State Association and Powerlifting Australia.

I would appreciate it if you would contact me with your views on this matter so that we can work together for the benefit of all Australian blind lifters.

Regards,

Derry Beavis
